Piano Opening voices in both hands
|
As we already know, it will always be ideal for us to be able to take advantage of the different sound characteristics that the record of the piano provides, which is why it is important that we arrange the voices of our chords in both hands whenever possible.
There are several ways to assemble chords in both hands. This time we will learn a technique known as Drop2 with which our voicings will be more effective.
The Drop 2 technique can be learned quickly if we pay attention to the following steps:
We will start with a seventh chord (for example a Gmaj7 chord) to which we will add an extension of 9th. The second step will be to play that chord with both hands, for this we will simply make the left hand play the fundamental and the right hand the rest of the notes of the chord (3rd, 5th, 7th and 9th). Now we can apply the technique of Drop 2 as follows: We take the second highest note of the voicings (in this case the note Fa #) and lower it an octave so that it can be played with the left hand.
As we can see, now our Gmaj7 voicing is available in both hands, with which we achieve a wider and more effective sonority than with the closed disposition used primarily.
There is also the possibility of using this technique in another arrangement, this time based on an investment. Again here we will lower an octave the second highest note and we will play it with the left hand.
These two dispositions are fundamental in the technique of Drop 2 since thanks to them we can make links in progressions that move through the circle of fifths (as for example progressions II VI).
Now something to keep in mind: we will call closed disposition to the option that is based on the fundamental, 3rd and 7th of the chord and open disposition to which it is based on the fundamental, 7th and 3rd of the chord.
If you still have doubts with some concepts such as investments or circle of fifths, we invite you to review our jazz theory book LESSONS tab where theoretical material is found for those who start in music. It will be until the next meeting. |
